About

My name is Amy. I’m a daughter, a sister, a writer, a human rights activist, an animal lover and a Christian. I’m a newbie cooking enthusiast, long-time fashion junkie and proud Canadian.

I’ve spent much of my adult life living abroad and my travels have taken me across North America, Europe and Africa. I have had the incredible opportunity to work for organizations including jhr (Journalists for Human Rights) and Canadian Feed The Children, and I’m currently working towards my MA in Human Rights Practice.

I value each friend I’ve made on this road, however long or short our journey together was, and I find comfort in the assurance that this path always leads me back home to what I value above all – my family.

  1. Hey Amy!

Just wanted to send you a quick message to see how you’re doing?! Wonderful, safe, and happy I hope?! <3 Can't wait to see you when you get back to hear all your stories! Take lots of pictures! Miss you xox!

    Stay Safe!

    Love, Kimberly

    • Ditto! I thought this same post reminded me of myself :-)

I’m curious Amy – where are you studying for your MA? I just finished my MA in Advertising and my goal is to work towards heightening awareness of Human Rights (working for Africa Against Hunger or World Vision are some goals I have). Have you worked with any foundations, ngos or non-profits that you would suggest I look into? Maybe I have to get a degree in Human Rights??

      Thanks :-)

      Lisa

  2. I just stumbled upon your blog having seen your “Single” post on the WordPress homepage. Having loved that post and seeing as you have some similar interests/hats as me – travel, animals, fashion, cooking (i’ve been attempting) – daughter, sister, Christian – I will definitely be following you now and living through your travels vicariously!! I am also new to the blog world so you will give me something interesting to follow as you will be my 2nd following =)

  3. Being recently single, having gone through a horrible drawn out break up, I stumbled onto your ‘single’ post, it was very inspiring. It was especially touching because I had just made all of those realizations on my own about 12 hours prior to having read your post. It helped me to reinforce those ideals and helped me believe that I’m not crazy. Well totally crazy I mean, lol.

  4. Hey, saw your post on freshly pressed and looked in on your older posts. Love the journey through the different parts of Africa. Interesting getting an outsiders perspective. I’m from Zambia. And reading about your travelling makes me want to travel too! And I hate travel so just goes to show!!!!

  5. Great comments! I don’t know if it is different being a man but, other than being lonely on occasions, but I am not sad about being single. I have had girlfriends and relationships that are wonderful and some that aren’t. Being with a girlfriend however, has not dictated if I am happy or not. I have learned as I have matured that my happiness comes from within by taking care of myslef phsyically and mentally.
Sure having a loved one to share special moments together can be wonderful, but if you are not happy with yourself or don’t love yourself, being in a relationship will not make you happy.

    • Haha, thank you rmv! It’s actually the second last line of Robert Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’ poem, it goes: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” I see what you mean when read out of context, but I just couldn’t justify changing the line, Frost might just come back to haunt me. Haha. Thanks for commenting, though! :)

  6. Found your blog via freshly pressed and will be following it! I interacted with some JHR folks while in Ghana on a journalism scholarship and am interested in looking into the program more. Where, specifically, were you located?

  7. I just came across your blog on Freshly Pressed. Your post on being Single was encouraging! I am also a daughter, sister, Christian, and single :) I look forward to reading more of your posts :)

  8. Very much enjoyed reading your post… loads of similarities, so if you’d like to please have a look at my blog too – vzh184. Keep up the good work, and congratulations on being freshly pressed :P

  9. Hi Amy, I really enjoyed your blog. I will start by saying I am not single, happily engaged, looking forward to the future….but I think being single can be a very good thing….it’s certainly better than “settling” for a mediocre relationship! It took me a long time to find the right person, but it’s worth the wait! I will look forward to your next post! Liz

  10. Hi Amy,
I just found your blog and I really enjoy reading it. I also saw that you made a stop in Sweden, where I am from and I must say I loved your posts and photos of Stockholm. Keep going!

    Kind Regards,
    Tove

love & light to you and yours,

    EL

    ps – u r stunning

  12. Thank you for sharing with the world your heart and findings… I’ve been encouraged by your posts. Love how you described yourself: “I’m a daughter, a sister, a writer, a human rights activist, an animal lover and a Christian.”

I think I over look my position as a a daughter, a sister, a writer, an activist, a lover, and a Christian. Sometimes our lives become so consumed with the doing, we forget what we are. I know I have. Thank you for the reminder!

Keep up the writing from your heart!

  13. It took me sometime to think what to post. :D Hmmm..maybe saying “hi” and “i like your post on the wordpress home page” are enough. I will surely check more of your post soon. Weee!

  14. You sound like somebody I would like to be friends with. …and you sound Canadian, and I like that, since I am also Canadian. I was in Sweden in 2008 – I *loved* Stockholm. How wonderful. (And on what I like to call “ASD’s” – Angry Single Days, my counter-attack usually includes a long run; comfort food; and if I can swing it, a date with my 3 year old god-daughter).

  15. Hi Amy, fabulous bloog….. came thru frshly presed bt followed throughout as it’s a nice site to visit frquently……. Human rites activist???Kewl:D

  16. Hey Amy! I just wanted to say i really enjoy your blog. I am spending this year traveling around Africa and was in Malawi a couple of months ago. It definitely was an interesting place. Did you ever visit Cape Maclear? Well keep up the great work and I look forward to your next post!
